Archetype Sighting! SciFi Romance Hero-Heroine Matches

6 Archetype Pairings that occur more frequently than others

After categorizing the heroes and heroines from 33 science fiction romances, I matched them up to see if any of the archetypes paired up more frequently than others. Here are the results:

Damsel in Distress + Charmer

The hero puts his charm to good use, consoling and winning over his rescued damsel. Even though the hero isn’t as much of an “alpha”, nor is he a brooder or a bad boy, he still fights to protect the heroine.

Barbarian’s Touch (Ice Planet Barbarians 7)
Smiley (New Species 13)

Damsel in Distress + Ruler

This pairing has been around since the origins of fairy tales. The heroine discovers that her dashing rescuer is a ruler, who sweeps her away to be his queen.

Ice Planet Barbarians (Ice Planet Barbarians 1)
Ral’s Woman (Zorn Warriors 1)

Female Warrior + Beast

The fierce heroine, who’s a better fighter than most men she knows, meets her match in a hero who’s more dangerous than she is. When she fights the relationship, he’s frustrated at first, physically overpowers her, but eventually admires her strength and ferocity.

Darkness (New Species 12)
Mated to the Beast (Interstellar Brides 5)

Female Warrior + Ruler

The most feminist-bent pairing of the bunch. Oftentimes the rulers come from a species/society in which the men rule or are at least physically superior to their female counterparts. When the ruler falls for a woman who contests his notions of what females can and cannot do, there’s significant head-butting in the relationship. The fighting female isn’t what the ruler had imagined in a mate. Making her his queen causes some political or social upset.

The Challenge
Contract to Pleasure
Justice (New Species 4)

Translator + Neanderthal

The articulate or socially adept woman is matched to the male who communicates through grunts and sex. This pairing offers tons of relationship tension and character development.

Sweet Alien Savage (Zerconian Warriors 4)
Moon (New Species 10)

Translator + Ruler

The female archetype of the translator is almost the ideal archetype for the ruler. If she can interpret or better understand his culture/society, she’s a better candidate as his co-ruler.

Alien Warrior (Zerconian Warriors 1)
No Words Alone (Spark 2)
